Printing Guidelines

For best results please follow the software guidelines provided below. Supreme Printing cannot be held responsible for errors or delays due to incorrectly submitted files.

Please note, we accept Adobe Photoshop files for your images but do not recommend using this application for your entire layout as the resolution that is ideal for photographs will cause type to appear somewhat jagged when professionally printed. Further, a layout submitted in Adobe Photoshop limits our ability to make corrections or edit your document if an error is discovered.

FILE CHECKLIST

Platforms

• Macintosh
• PC

Applications
• Adobe Illustrator (version 8.0 or later)
• Adobe InDesign (version 2.0 or later)
• Adobe Photoshop (version 5.0 or later)
• Macromedia FreeHand (version 7.0 or later)
• QuarkXPress (version 4 or later)

General Requirements
• Allow proper bleed (1/8" or .125).
• Keep all type and important graphics 1/8" or .125 away from the edge of your document
  (in the safety/live area).
• Define all colors as CMYK (or PMS if applicable).
• Include your software and version info on all orders.
• Check that documents are correct size, with crop and fold marks.

Scans & Graphics
• Correct file formats are TIFF and EPS. Do not use JPG format.
• Save as CMYK, grayscale, or bitmap color mode. No RGB, index color, etc.
• Make sure all scans and graphics are 100% of actual output size.
• Use the proper resolutions of 300 dpi for color/grayscale images and 1200 dpi for bitmap.
• BEWARE! Internet images are not detailed enough for use in professional printing.

• No extra channels, layers, or paths unless necessary.
• Rotate and size images in the original program – Illustrator, Freehand or Photoshop –
before importing into InDesign or Quark; they will image faster.
• Do not embed graphics. If you have done so, go ahead and supply the original graphics
  along with your job.
• In Quark, when placing TIFFs in boxes, make sure the background is set to "white".
If the background must stay "none", then create a clipping path if a silo is needed.
• To avoid banding in gradients, create a black & white gradient file in Photoshop rather
than using the InDesign or Quark gradient tool.
• Use a rich black. Large solid black areas should be set as 20/20/0/100 to print a rich,
dark black. This does not apply to type.
• Know when to use "overprint" vs. "knock-out". If you are in doubt, please contact us
  to inquire.
• When using fonts in Adobe Illustrator graphics, make to sure to convert to outlines
before sending your job. edit>select all / type>create outlines
• Make sure all files are editable.

Font Information
• Supply all screen and printer fonts, or truetype fonts used in the job and linked supports.
• Avoid assigning type attributes (bold, italic, bold italic); instead, use the correct font.
(This will avoid using a type style you do not have an actual screen and printer font for.)
• Avoid Multiple Master fonts.

Special instructions
• Note any special instructions you have on the file submission form.

REGARDING NON-DESKTOP PUBLISHING PROGRAMS

Some programs that lack the features of Desktop Publishing Programs include:

Word Processing Programs. These programs provide for quick input of type but lack the proper color palettes and output features necessary for professional printing. These programs include Microsoft Word & Corel Word Perfect.

Slide Presentation Programs. These programs often have no ability (or a very limited ability) to export illustrations and type in an acceptable vector format. Microsoft Power Point is a presentation program.

Web Authoring Programs. These programs work with an entirely different page descriptive language and the images in these programs are sampled at a much lower resolution than is needed for professional printing. These programs include Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Front Page.

Spreadsheet, Chart and Database Programs. These programs provide for quick input of tabular and numerical information but lack the proper control of color and output features necessary for professional printing. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program.

Low-End/Home Based Publishing Packages. These programs are usually great for creating greeting cards, banners and family newsletters. They come with a number of fonts and clip art and print to a wide array of laser, ink jet and dot matrix printers. Their shortcomings usually surface when trying to print color separations.

If you have a job that has been created in one of the above programs, contact us and we can talk with you about how/if your project can be converted for professional printing.
